In 2008, Jason & Jennifer Sonker adopted a scared and shy dog named Shadow from the Whatcom Humane Society in Bellingham, WA. They took Shadow home, introduced her to her new brother (Pedro) and slowly she transformed into a loving, carefree member of their family.
Although Shadow was a small, blonde, long-haired chihuahua, she LOVED to go hiking with her dad. Her favorite trails were Tiger Mountain off I-90, Dirty Face Peak near Lake Wenatchee, and Oyster Dome in the Chuckanuts. She had actually just hiked Oyster Dome a few weeks prior to her passing, and was going to ascend Tiger Mountain soon thereafter.
On Saturday, June 4, 2011, Shadow was lost to this world in a terrible, unfortunate accident. But her spirit will NEVER die. We should all aspire to live our lives with the amazing and improbable energy that this little dog displayed during her time on the earth. Her spirit for life and unconditional love were truly amazing!
In honor of her memory and love for the outdoors, Jason & Jenn started their annual Shadow Hike-A-Thon fundraiser. Since its first year in 2011, the event has raised over $160,000 for the animal rescue organizations Whatcom Humane Society (2011-2017) and Old Dog Haven (2018-2023). In the spring of 2020, Shadow’s Forever Friends was created by Jason & Jenn as a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit dedicated to advocating for those animals who are most in need (especially senior dogs) by promoting love, compassion, awareness, and education through community outreach and events.
Shadow will always live in our hearts. We love her and miss her, forever!
Thank You for Helping Us Help Those Who Will Follow in Shadow's Footsteps!
